Sweltering heat will bring near-record temperatures to Michigan

A significant heat wave is expected to hit the Lower Peninsula next week, with temperatures reaching the mid-90s for inland areas of Michigan.

Starting Monday, temperatures are expected to reach the 90s across the Lower Peninsula and could even have heat indexes approaching 100 during the week.

The NWS Weather Prediction Center released an overview of the expected heat wave for the Midwest and Northeast, highlighting a low (20-40%) risk of excessive heat for the majority of the Lower Peninsula.

Temperatures near or above 100 degrees will be possible across much of the state during this heat wave, with the eastern part of Michigan offering the highest chances.

Big Rapids will see temperatures reach the low 90s on Monday and stay at or above 93 degrees through the middle of the week. Areas south of Big Rapids could approach record temperatures in West Michigan.

“The biggest concern during this period will be building heat,” the NWS Grand Rapids said in its June 13 daily forecast discussion. “Temperatures could approach record temperatures. The warmest day is expected to be Monday the 17th. Lansing, Kalamazoo and Battle Creek are currently expected to be at or near record highs.

The lakeshores, especially around Manistee, will see slightly lower temperatures, with a high of 83 for Monday that is expected to remain in the mid-80s throughout the week. Temperatures will rise quickly and into the 90s further inland in Manistee County.

Midland will experience stifling heat. with temperatures expected around 95 degrees or higher starting Monday and lasting through the middle of the week. Heat indexes can approach 100 degrees across the region.

“Higher than usual confidence in warm and humid conditions for much of next week,” the Detroit/Pontiac NWS said in its June 13 daily forecast discussion. “Temperatures well into the 90s on Monday and beyond with relatively high humidity will likely bring the highest heat cues we've seen so far this year.

The Upper Thumb region will also see similar temperatures, with the Bad Ax region remaining in the low to mid 90s throughout the week.
