Suspected carjacker arrested following chase in Monroe County

MONROE, Michigan. – A suspected carjacker was arrested Saturday, June 8 after a brief chase through parts of Monroe County.

The incident began around 7:30 p.m. when a man allegedly attacked a driver and stole his vehicle on Macomb Street in Monroe. A description of the vehicle – an olive green Subaru Outback – and its license plate were sent to area law enforcement by the Monroe Police Department.

According to authorities, a Monroe County sheriff's deputy attempted a traffic stop after locating the vehicle traveling northbound on Monroe Street in Frenchtown Township. The Subaru allegedly sped off and was pursued by authorities on Telegraph Road. Stop sticks managed to puncture two tires of the stolen vehicle, which eventually stopped in a residential area just south of Newport Road.

The sheriff's office said the suspect tried to run away but was stopped by officers.

The man — described only by authorities as a 47-year-old from Newport — was booked into the Monroe County Jail on charges of fleeing and eluding, assault and battery on police and resisting arrest. The Monroe Police Department is seeking charges related to the reported carjacking.
