Suspected car thief found dead after car crash in Box Elder County

BOX ELDER COUNTY, Utah (ABC4) — Early Tuesday morning, a man was found dead after crashing into a car previously reported stolen.

According to Utah Department of Public Safety, Box Elder Dispatch officials received a call around 5:45 a.m. Tuesday morning. The caller reported a vehicle in a ditch near mile marker 20 on I-84.

“Further investigation revealed that the vehicle involved was stolen from Weber County around midnight,” officials said.

The driver found at the scene of the accident matched the description of the suspect who allegedly stole the vehicle.

Officers arrived on scene about 20 minutes after receiving the call and found a silver Toyota Sequoia “with significant damage” near mile marker 18, according to DPS.

“The SUV was located on an embankment and was not clearly visible from the roadway,” DPS said in a statement. “The driver was ejected from the vehicle during the crash and rollover.”

Authorities said the driver was the sole occupant of the vehicle and was pronounced deceased.

The cause of the accident is still under investigation. DPS said troopers will coordinate with the appropriate agencies regarding the stolen car.

Following the crash, lanes were closed on I-84 for approximately three hours.

There is no further information at this time.
