Suspect wanted for shooting near gun violence awareness event

Mount Vernon police are searching for the person who allegedly shot Friday night near a gun violence awareness event.

Police attempted to track down the suspect, but were never arrested.

The incident occurred as Mount Vernon and other Hudson Valley cities try to prevent gun violence in their communities.

Although the shootings occurred near a gun violence awareness event, Mayor Shawyn Patterson-Howard said the number of shootings so far this year was actually lower than the last year.

“As we continue our community programs, we continue to strengthen gun violence prevention,” she said, adding that the incident did not spoil the community event festivities.

“We haven't allowed this to interrupt our day of celebration. It's just another reason for us to continue to have our events,” Patterson-Howard said.

Police say no one was hit by the shooting and there is no evidence of property damage.

Residents said they want to see more gun buyback events in Mount Vernon, especially during a time of gun violence awareness.

Police say no one was hit by the shooting and there is no evidence of property damage.

Anyone with information about the incident is asked to contact the Mount Vernon Police Department Detective Division at 914-665-2510. All calls will remain confidential.
