Suspect Under Investigation For Sex Crimes Expected To Survive (Photo)

The subject of a sex crimes investigation is expected to survive after an early morning shooting.

On Wednesday, May 29, 2024, at approximately 4 a.m., detectives from the Portland Police Bureau's Internet Crimes Against Children Unit, with assistance from the Special Emergency Response Team (SERT), began executing a search warrant at a home. in the 2700 block of 137th Avenue Northeast. At 6:08 a.m., SERT members entered the front of the house. At that point, the suspect exited the rear of the house armed with a rifle (photo attached) and was shot and killed by a SERT member.

The suspect, a 44-year-old man, was transported to an area hospital where he is expected to survive. The search warrant served Wednesday morning was an indictment for the following charges: encouraging second-degree child sexual abuse (six counts) and encouraging sexual assault of an animal (one charge).

No officers were injured during this incident. The affected member will be placed on paid administrative leave. This is standard protocol following an officer-involved shooting.

In accordance with PPB guidelines, detectives from the Portland Police Homicide Unit responded to the scene to investigate.

Chief Bob Day also attended the scene and informed Mayor Wheeler's staff and the City Attorney's Office of the investigation.

As part of the use of force review process, the Office will conduct an internal review of the entire incident, including the initial response, resources requested, tactics used, and actions taken following the shooting . The matter will be referred to the Police Review Board (PRB), made up of community members, members of the Bureau and representatives of the Independent Police Review Division.

One person was injured in a police-involved shooting in the Russell neighborhood.

On Wednesday, May 29, 2024, at approximately 5:05 a.m., detectives from the Portland Police Bureau's Internet Crimes Against Children Unit, with assistance from the Special Emergency Response Team (SERT), executed a search warrant in the 2700 block of Northeast 137th Avenue when there was an encounter between an adult male and officers. The encounter resulted in an officer-involved shooting. The adult male was injured and transported to an area hospital. His condition is unknown. No officers were injured.

Several streets in the area are closed and will be closed throughout the investigation.
