Suspect stabbed, killed by Austin police identified

Police said the woman who was stabbed is in stable condition.

AUSTIN, Texas — Police have identified the man shot and killed by police on Monday, May 27 at the San Paloma Apartments in North Austin.

According to the Austin Police Department, officers responded to a call about a disturbance around 1:30 a.m. at the apartment complex on Tech Ridge Boulevard near Interstate 35. Callers said they could hear neighbors arguing, objects thrown and a woman screaming for help. .

Acting Austin Police Chief Robin Henerson said that around 1:48 a.m., officers forced entry into one of the apartments and saw a man stabbing a woman. That's when officers shot and killed the man, identified as 48-year-old Ensel Maclare-Urgelles.

Maclare-Urgelles was transported to hospital where he was pronounced dead at 3:05 a.m.

The woman suffered multiple stab wounds and was also transported to a local hospital. In an update on Monday, June 3, APD said the woman was in stable condition. No other people were injured during the incident.

Allison Frazier lives in the building where it happened and told KVUE she initially thought the disturbance was something else.

“It was on the second floor and I live above them… It’s really scary, especially as a student who is away from your parents,” Frazier said. “Really scary. We thought it was our cat that knocked things over last night, but it wasn't a cat,” Frazier said.

Per standard APD protocol, the officer who fired his weapon will be on administrative duty pending investigation. APD said the officer had six years of service with the department.

The shooting was captured on the officers' body cameras. Per APD policy, video of the case will be released within 10 business days.
