Suspect shot to death on Compton-area rooftop identified

An investigation continued Friday into the fatal shooting by deputies of a 30-year-old man who allegedly fired at a sheriff's helicopter from a Compton-area rooftop.

Deputies were called to the 14600 block of Cahita Avenue near Rosecrans Avenue – in an unincorporated area bordering Compton – around 7:45 p.m. Thursday regarding a man who may have been “ under the influence” and armed with a shotgun in the backyard of a home. . There are reports that the man may have already fired a few shots, according to the sheriff's department.

Arriving officers initially spotted the man in the backyard of the home, but he eventually managed to make his way to the roof.
