Suspect shoots himself after high-speed chase

A person suspected of committing an armed robbery Saturday led police on a high-speed chase from Woodworth to the outskirts of Alexandria, shooting at Rapides Parish sheriff's deputies and eventually killing himself. shooting him in the head, according to a press release.

The unidentified suspect was taken to the hospital, but the sheriff's office statement said his condition is unknown. The sheriff's office said it will not release the suspect's name at this time.

It began around 4:37 p.m. with a report of an armed robbery at a convenience store at Los Angeles Highway 121 and Los Angeles Highway 465 in the Sieper area, the release states. The thief left with cash, but it was not immediately clear how much, we read.

But deputies and detectives “were able to acquire solid information and positively identify the suspect and the suspect vehicle,” it reads. This information was shared with other law enforcement agencies, and an officer with the Woodworth Police Department subsequently spotted the vehicle traveling north on US Highway 165.

The officer attempted to stop the driver, but he did not stop. The driver turned onto Horseshoe Drive in Alexandria and continued onto Twin Bridges Road, picking up deputies and Alexandria Police Department officers while fleeing.

Spike strips were placed near McKeithen Drive, the release states. The suspect began shooting at deputies and struck at least one vehicle.

“Officers returned fire, but the suspect was able to flee the location, continuing his pursuit on Twin Bridges Road, stopping near Messina Road,” the release states.

It says the suspect was “brandishing” the weapon as police tried to convince him to surrender. The suspect then shot himself in the head.

The police took care of the suspect until the Acadian Ambulance arrived to take him to the hospital.

Detectives and crime scene investigators remain on scene, stretching from McKeithen Drive to Messian Road, and are asking the public to stay away from the area.
