Suspect killed in Brentwood officer-involved shooting – WPXI

BRENTWOOD, Pa. — A man is dead after being shot multiple times by a Brentwood police officer after a brief car chase, according to Allegheny County police.

Police said they were trying to arrest a suspected car thief.

“There's not a lot going on in Brentwood, it's a pretty quiet community, especially in this area, so it's a little disturbing that this happened,” said Ken Kornick, who lives on the street where the shooting took place.

According to Allegheny County Police, their officers first spotted a car reported stolen in Carnegie around 5 p.m. Wednesday and attempted to stop the driver in South Park.

The driver first stopped, then allegedly fled.

County officers did not follow, but Brentwood police spotted the car on Route 51 a few minutes later.

“They pursued the vehicle through Brentwood side streets for several minutes, during which time the suspect vehicle struck one of the Brentwood officers on Laveton Road,” said county Police Superintendent Chris Kearns.

According to Kearns, the suspect's car then stopped along Check Way near Dauphin Street due to a flat tire.

He would have gotten out and started running.

“The officer got into a physical fight with the suspect. During this fight, he noticed that the suspect was armed with a handgun. The physical struggle continued and during this confrontation, the officer fired several rounds, striking the suspect,” Kearns said.

Officers then began performing CPR on the man.

Investigators say he was rushed to the hospital where he died.

“It was sickening when I saw them doing CPR on someone who had just been shot and the car was right here, I felt like I couldn't watch that. I had to leave,” said neighbor Jana Faust.

County police did not say whether the suspect pulled out his gun or attempted to shoot.

Kearns says the Brentwood officer had a body camera activated that will be used in the investigation.

“I’m proud that they are protecting our community.” It is important. It’s unfortunate that they had to use deadly force today, but sometimes it’s necessary,” neighbor Bill Sorochman said.

The name and age of the man killed have not been released.

Kearns says it will be up to Brentwood police to determine the next step for the officer who shot and killed the man.
