Suspect in custody in fatal CT pedestrian hit-and-run

A suspect in a fatal hit-and-run crash has been charged after investigators reviewed surveillance video from the area of ​​the incident, police said.

The fatal crash occurred shortly before 10 p.m. Friday in the 600 block of Main Street in East Haven, where a pedestrian was struck by a car and killed, police said.

The victim was identified as Gina LaVacca, 47, of Main Street, East Haven, police said.

The vehicle, initially described as a dark-colored sedan traveling east on Main Street in East Haven, fled the area, police said. Releasing an initial description, police said the offending vehicle “is expected to have damage to the front, possibly near the headlights.”

Then, after saturated the area, a “white hatchback seen in surveillance video was located at the Autumn Ridge apartment complex on Gerrish Avenue in East Haven and its driver was taken into custody , the police said.

The driver, Elizabeth Cronk, 45, was quickly located, taken into custody and charged with evading duty resulting in death and operating a motor vehicle without a license, police said. Cronk was being held on $250,000 bail and will appear in court Monday, June 17, 2024 at 121 Elm St. New Haven, police said.

Police had urged anyone living in the area of ​​the 600 block of Main Street to check their cameras for a sedan traveling east on Main Street around 10 p.m.
