Suspect in custody after Sunday afternoon shooting near Findlay Market

CINCINNATI — Cincinnati Police Lt. Jonathan Cunningham said he arrested a suspect in a shooting that left a man injured earlier Sunday near Findlay Market.

Police arrested Ralph Burnette, 25, and charged him with felonious assault.

Earlier in the day, Cincinnati police and firefighters responded to reports of a shooting near Findlay Market — around 2:40 p.m., Cunningham said.

A person, identified as a 28-year-old man, was found with a gunshot wound to the leg while in the 1800 block of Elm Street, which is very close to Findlay Market, police said .

The victim was transported to UC Medical Center with non-life-threatening injuries. He is listed in stable condition, according to police.

“As soon as we parked the car, we turned off the car and heard two to four gunshots,” said Elijah Fidder, who was shopping at the market on Sunday.

Gavin Taylor also heard the gunshots. He worked in a store on Elm Street.

“Someone was shouting, 'Get down, get down,'” he said. “Some people ran into our store.”

Juan Leon was shopping in this store. He initially thought the gunshots were the sound of a coat hanger falling to the floor.

“I come out and I see a guy lying on the ground,” he said.

Léon watched as the paramedics loaded him into an ambulance.

Before the arrest, Cincinnati police were seen canvassing the area all around Findlay Market Sunday afternoon with long guns pointed at the side.
