CEBU CITY, Philippines — The suspect behind the murder of a barangay employee in Brgy. Duljo Fatima of Cebu City on Monday afternoon, June 17, was identified by law enforcement.

The fatal shooting claimed the life of Edward Abayan, 44, who works as an administrative aide at the Mambaling Barangay Hall in Cebu City.

According to witnesses, Abayan was shot by a man while eating at a carenderia along Spolarium Street in Brgy. Duljo Fatima around 1 p.m. Monday.

He died instantly.

Police Lt. Col. Janette Rafter, Cebu City Police Office (CCPO) deputy director of operations, told reporters Wednesday (June 19) that the investigation into the murder of a barangay employee has taken a turn positive after the identification of the suspect.

Furthermore, the Mambaling police are now preparing to file a murder case against the attacker through regular filing.

This means that the suspect will be arrested after an arrest warrant is issued.

Rafter, however, chose not to release the suspect's identity and background because the investigation is still ongoing.

She indicated that the authorities are waiting for the victim's family to be available to file a formal complaint at the police station.

Rafter also gave credence to several witnesses who allegedly cooperated with authorities in identifying the suspect in the murder of a barangay employee.

“We really appreciate sa kaisog sa atong mga lumulopyo nianang lugara. Kay ug wala sila, walay mu-witness, mupadayon gyud ning ing-aning problemaha,” she said.

As of this writing, police are still conducting a follow-up investigation to determine the possible motive for Abayan's death.

Brgy. Duljo Fatima is one of the most problematic barangays in Cebu City when it comes to the presence and distribution of illegal drugs.
