Suspect identified during pursuit and standoff in Des Moines

DES MOINES, Iowa — Authorities have released the name of a man who was arrested Monday following a pursuit and hours-long standoff in Des Moines.

Cody Radke

Cody Radke, 38, is being held in the Polk County Jail on several charges, including reckless driving, driving with a suspended license, as well as drug and traffic violations.

Criminal complaints filed in the case show an Iowa State Police trooper attempted a traffic stop on Radke, in the area of East 42nd St. and Hubbell Ave., around 11:18 a.m., under outstanding arrest warrants. Radke refused to stop, and at times during the pursuit he drove the wrong way into oncoming traffic.

The complaint says Radke drove to his residence in the 2900 block of E. 40th, where he barricaded himself inside.

Sgt. Alex Dinkla of the Iowa State Patrol said the people inside the home quickly left when Radke arrived. Multiple law enforcement agencies, including the Des Moines Police Department and the Polk County Sheriff's Office, responded to the scene and established a perimeter.

Negotiators worked for hours to get Radke to surrender, but when communication broke down, Sgt. Dinkla said they intensified their tactics to encourage Radke to come out using tear gas and loud canister shots.

“That's one of the things that our negotiators and all these agencies work together, they train together. And it's a classic example of why they train together. Because here in the City of Des Moines, we worked with the City of Des Moines, the Polk County Sheriff's Office and the State Patrol worked collectively to ensure that this was a peaceful resolution,” said Sgt. Dinka.

The confrontation ended shortly after 3 p.m. when Radke left the house and was taken into custody.
