CLAYTON — Peter F. Kerns, a 45-year-old Clayton resident, has been arrested in connection with a stabbing that occurred last month. Kerns remains behind bars at the Martinez Detention Center, awaiting $80,000 bail.

The stabbing occurred at the downtown Brooklyn Heros, a sandwich shop located at 6026 Main Street. It appears that an argument between the suspect and the victim escalated into violence during the lunch rush. John Canesa, 44, the owner of the sandwich shop, suffered multiple stab wounds. Clayton police officers responded to the sandwich shop shortly after 1 p.m. on June 25. Both Kerns and Canesa were present when police arrived.

Clayton police said in a prepared statement. “The victim, who was conscious and talking, was treated for multiple stab wounds and transported to John Muir Medical Center.” He was treated for his injuries and later released from the hospital.

Officers arrested Kerns at 1:06 p.m. He was booked on charges of assault with a deadly weapon/assault with force likely to cause serious bodily injury.

The Contra Costa County District Attorney’s Office filed two counts against Kerns on June 27. Kerns is charged with assault with a deadly weapon PC 245(A). In addition, Kerns is also charged with a special enhanced charge of causing serious bodily injury PC 12022.7(A). His next court appearance is scheduled for July 10.

The investigation is ongoing. Anyone who witnessed the stabbing can call Clayton Police Officer Mitch Stroski at 925-673-7350.
