Suspect charged in fatal Gwinnett Co. bus hijacking

ATLANTA — Editor's note: The video above is from Tuesday's press conference with Atlanta Mayor Andre Dickens.

A man who robbed a Gwinnett County transit bus Tuesday, leading officers on a wild chase during which a passenger was found dead, has been identified and charged, according to jail records.

Fulton County Jail records show Joseph Grier, 39, was charged with the following charges:

Officers with the Atlanta Police Department were called to 45 Ivan Allen Junior Boulevard NE in Atlanta, where a report indicated that someone had carjacked the bus.

Authorities said the suspect commandeered the bus at gunpoint, leading to a multi-jurisdictional chase with 17 passengers on board. The chase ended at Stone Mountain, where the bus was disabled by law enforcement using spike strips and a BearCat vehicle.

A passenger was found shot during the ordeal and later died in hospital. The Atlanta Police Department, with assistance from the Georgia State Patrol, handled the crisis, which resulted in several vehicles colliding, including a patrol car. This incident is separate from the shooting the same day at the Hub at Peachtree Center.
