Suspect, bystander injured in Colerain Township Kroger shooting

A suspect and a bystander were sent to the hospital after being shot Wednesday at a Kroger in Colerain Township.

Just before 4 p.m., officers responded to a report of shots fired at the Kroger on Springdale Road, according to Colerain Police Chief Edwin Cordie, who spoke at a news conference broadcast live by WLWT later that evening.

Cordie said when officers arrived and located the suspect outside the store, they engaged in a shootout, prompting the suspect to retreat inside the store.

The suspect and officers continued to exchange gunfire inside the Kroger. The suspect was eventually shot and taken into custody.

During the shooting, a bystander was also shot, Cordie said.

The suspect and bystander were taken to hospital and are expected to survive, Cordie added.

The officers involved in the shooting have both been placed on administrative leave, per police department policy. Cordie said police have asked the Ohio Bureau of Criminal Investigation to conduct an independent investigation.

Colerain Township spokeswoman Helen Tracey-Noren told The Enquirer that residents and visitors can now pick up their vehicles in the Kroger parking lot after it closed for investigation.
