Suspect arrested in jewelry store burglary: Westlake Police Blotter

WESTLAKE, Ohio –

Breaking and entering: Detroit Road

An employee at a shopping center at Bradley and Detroit roads called the Westlake Police Department at 6 a.m. on May 29 to report that the door to the plaza's jewelry store was damaged and glass was missing.

The store had been entered by force during the night. Detectives identified a suspect and officers executed a search warrant June 4 at a residence on Huss Avenue in Cleveland. Officers arrested a 60-year-old resident and charged him with felony breaking and entering.

Additional charges may be considered when the case is presented to a Cuyahoga County grand jury, according to a statement from the police department.

Arrest Warrant and Resisting Arrest: Sperry Drive

On June 5, at 5:30 p.m., a police officer spotted a man known to be wanted by Trumbull County authorities on a charge of aggravated drug possession.

The suspect was in a vehicle in the parking lot of the WestSpring Inn on Sperry Drive.

The 54-year-old Toledo man refused to follow police instructions and was taken into custody with minor use of force, according to a news release from the Westlake Police Department. Police filed an additional charge of resisting arrest.

The man's son was also present at the scene. Both father and son were charged with failure to comply with lawful orders, according to the ministry.

Improper handling of a firearm: I-90

On June 5, at 1:30 a.m., officers stopped a vehicle on westbound I-90 near Lorain County for speeding and having an unsafe windshield, which was broken.

The 20-year-old driver, from Cleveland, did not have a license. The driver and a 19-year-old passenger said a bullet hole in the passenger door occurred when the vehicle was recently hit by gunfire at a gas station. They did not give details.

Officers found an open container of tequila, marijuana and a loaded 9mm handgun with an extended magazine in the vehicle. Both men were arrested for improper handling of a firearm and carrying a concealed weapon.

Disorderly conduct: Dover Center Road

On June 6, at 11:30 p.m., an officer spotted a woman sleeping in the parking lot of the Speedway gas station on Dover Center Road at Center Ridge Road.

The 42-year-old Westlake resident said once she woke up, she decided to take a nap in the parking lot during an evening walk. She appeared drunk and needed police help to get up.

She was charged with disorderly conduct while intoxicated and released to a sober friend.

Flight: Crocker Park

On May 14 at 5 p.m., Crocker Park employees reported the theft of an 8-foot trailer.

Surveillance video showed the driver of a Mercury Mountaineer leaving with the trailer at 6:20 a.m. on April 25. On June 6, officers arrested a 39-year-old Elyria man and charged him with theft.

The trailer has not yet been found.
