“Suspect arrested for trafficking girls to Ghana as sex workers,” confirms Abike Dabiri

The Chairman of the Nigerians in Diaspora Commission (NiDCOM), Mrs. Abike Dabiri Erewa, has confirmed the arrest of a suspect who was trafficking young girls to Ghana as sex workers..

The NiDCOM Chairman made this known in a tweet while thanking Chief Callistus, Chairman of Nido Ghana for his support which led to the speedy arrest of the suspect.

She wrote: “These are young girls trafficked to Ghana for prostitution. We thank Chief Callistus, President of Nido Ghana, for ensuring the arrest of the perpetrator.

I'm sure @naptipnigeria will follow up, it's very, very heartbreaking. The National Agency for the Prohibition of Trafficking in Persons and Other Related Matters (NAPTIP) has also launched an investigation into the circumstances behind a viral video showing teenage girls allegedly being trafficked to Ghana for prostitution.

In the video uploaded by Pastor Okezie, the girls, aged around eight, claimed to have been lured to Ghana by a man, who happened to be the brother of one of them, and who ended up using them as “money-making machines”. »

The girls are sixteen and under. They further claimed that all the money they earned through prostitution was taken from them by their traffickers.

When contacted, the spokesperson of the National Agency for the Prohibition of Trafficking in Persons, Vincent Adekoye, for comment, said the agency was aware of the situation. He promised that the agency had opened an investigation into the matter and would respond to all requests made. by the girls in the video.

He wrote: “The Agency has commenced full-scale investigations following the DG’s directive to ascertain the location of the victims, any contact numbers and other details which will facilitate our rapid intervention to rescue them. The Agency has also opened discussions with relevant partners in Ghana on the issue.

“NAPTIP is seriously disturbed by the video and will do everything in its power to respond to their demands and also bring their trafficker to justice. It solicits useful information from all stakeholders in the matter.

“The Agency has commenced full-scale investigations following the DG’s directive to ascertain the location of the victims, any contact numbers and other details that will facilitate our rapid intervention to rescue them. The Agency has also opened discussions on the issue with relevant state and non-state actors in the identified destination countries,” the agency added.
