Suspect accused of stabbing ex-girlfriend in Jonesville set to go to trial

JONESVILLE — A Jonesville man accused of stabbing his ex-girlfriend multiple times in the head and neck on Dec. 23, 2023 is tentatively scheduled for a criminal pretrial conference in 1st Judicial Circuit Court at 1 p.m. July 8.

Dustin Thomas Collins, 20, was arraigned in Circuit Court on a charge of assault with intent to murder following a preliminary examination hearing earlier this year in 2B District Court.

Preliminary hearings had been adjourned to allow more time for evidence to be discovered.

Collins is accused of stabbing his ex-girlfriend, the mother of his child, more than a dozen times in the face and head with a pocket knife.

The incident occurred around 6:30 p.m. on Dec. 23, 2023, when Collins allegedly stabbed the 19-year-old woman during a domestic dispute at the Heritage Lane Apartments in Jonesville, according to witnesses at the scene.

During an interview with Michigan State Police after his arrest, Collins told police he had a change of heart and wanted to kill her after he began stabbing her and that he himself called 911 to report the crime, according to Hillsdale County Prosecutor Neal Brady.

According to neighbors, the couple had an unstable relationship and recently separated.

Medical first responders from the Town of Hillsdale Fire Department and paramedics from the Reading Emergency Unit responded to the incident and the woman was transported to Hillsdale Hospital; she has since been released.
