SUNDERLAND face a battle to retain Jobe Bellingham this summer amid growing interest from Premier League clubs.

Crystal Palace and Brentford have both identified the teenager as a summer target following his impressive debut season at the Stadium of Light.

The Black Cats are determined to retain Bellingham this summer, but their resolve is likely to be tested in the months to come.

The length of Bellingham's contract was not disclosed when the youngster joined Birmingham City 12 months ago, but it is understood he still has several seasons remaining, so Sunderland are in a strong position.

Mike Dodds previously warned Premier League clubs they would have to pay huge sums to entice Sunderland to let go of their stars this summer.

The former interim head coach said: “It is very clear that if someone wants to come and take a player from Sunderland they will have to pay the premium, because whatever it is, you are talking about a young player who has already done well, but it still has the potential to develop further.

“You're also talking about a player with time on his contract, so when you put those three things together, it's clear you're going to have to pay a premium.”

Director of football Dougie Freedman is leading Crystal Palace's pursuit of Bellingham after the pursuit of the 18-year-old was given the green light by boss Oliver Glasner. Palace have successfully signed the EFL's top talent, with Adam Wharton the latest star to shine at Selhurst Park after being dropped from the Championship.

Brentford are also said to be keen on Bellingham, with the teenager's versatility attracting the Bees. Bellingham played in midfield, as a No.10 and forward for Sunderland in his first season on Wearside.

Dodds previously backed Bellingham to establish themselves as Sunderland's number 9 next season.

Sunderland are now preparing for offers for Bellingham and Jack Clarke this summer, with the winger also in high demand thanks to his excellent individual campaign on Wearside. Lazio failed in a move for Clarke in January and have also been linked with Bellingham.

Sunderland's new head coach will no doubt want assurances over the club's plans for its star players. It remains unclear who will replace Michael Beale in the Stadium of Light dugout, with reports this week claiming a deal has been reached with Raphael Wicky believed to be far from the truth. Sunderland have not held discussions with Wicky and the process of appointing a new boss continues.
