Sumter man arrested after trying to elude deputy

COLUMBIA, SC (WIS) – A man was arrested Friday evening after trying to avoid a deputy.

The Sumter County Sheriff's Office (SCSO) said a deputy on patrol noticed a car speeding past traffic while crossing the double yellow line on Boulevard Road around 10:50 p.m. Friday.

Instead of obeying the blue lights, the driver, Maleeke Myers, accelerated to avoid the deputy. The deputy followed Myers to a home on Rolling Creek Drive, where Myers and a passenger, Fredrick Anthony Woods, got out of the car and attempted to run.

The deputy loudly told the two men to stop and get on the ground, SCSO said. Both men complied and were held at gunpoint until a Sumter Police Department unit arrived on scene.

SCSO discovered Myers was driving under suspension and found a large amount of marijuana and a firearm during a search of his vehicle. Myers told deputies he possessed all of the drugs and weapons.

Myers was charged with possession of a firearm by a felon, possession with intent to distribute marijuana, failure to stop for blue lights and driving under suspension. He was taken to the Sumter County Sheriff's Office Detention Center, where he is being held on $105,000 bail.

Woods was issued a citation for having alcohol with a broken seal inside the vehicle and then released.
