Summit County Sheriff's Office reduces deputy shortage by swearing in 14 recruits

Summit County Sheriff Kandy Fatheree swears in 14 new deputies Monday morning in Akron.

The Summit County Sheriff's Office says its stepped-up recruiting strategy is producing tangible results, with 14 new deputies sworn in Monday to help the force address its staffing shortage.

The office said in a news release that it is rebounding from 2022, when it lost 59 deputies, with retirements far outpacing hires. With the addition this week of new graduates from the Summit County Sheriff's Office and the University of Akron Police Academy, the county is just 28 deputies short of its goal. The recent cadet class was full and another full class is expected to begin training in the fall.

Summit County Sheriff Kandy Fatheree said the department aims to return to full staffing in two years. She said her office has increased its outreach to women and minorities.

“There were many groups in our community that for a long time were overlooked when it came to recruiting – those days are over,” Fatheree said.

With the help of a grant, the sheriff's team produced videos and graphics and purchased advertisements on social media platforms and television. The department also increased its visibility at job fairs as well as social and cultural events within Akron's immigrant communities.

“Every interaction we have with the public is an opportunity to talk about a career with the Sheriff's Office,” Academy Commander Bill Holland said. “We are constantly networking and engaging. »

Fatheree announced that the office now pays full tuition for the academy upon completion and provides an hourly wage during training to help recruits with their finances.

“It’s an investment in their future, it’s an investment in the future of our office and it’s an investment in the safety of our community,” Sheriff Fatheree said. “It’s a win-win any way you slice it.”
