Summer 'Teen Exploration Camp' offers insight into different careers – WKRG News 5

MOBILE, Ala. (WKRG) — Mobile Parks and Recreation Department day camps begin this morning. A special program for teenagers helps them prepare for the future.

The Spring Hill Recreation Center is the site of weekly camps for older children. Teen Exploration Camp is for students aged 13 to 15.

Last week, camp counselors were at the recreation center for orientation training. Teen exploration camp is not limited to games and activities. It is also an opportunity for students to discover different career paths. Each week will have a different theme.

This week is dedicated to “arts and culture” and will explore different professions in this field. Other weeks might have guest speakers or field trips to different colleges or work sites. Organizers say it's a good opportunity to learn more about what happens after high school.

“At the age of 13 and 15, a lot of kids, a lot of young teenagers don't know exactly what they want to do. So it’s a great opportunity that I wish I had at my age to expose them to different avenues that they can take,” said Recreation Supervisor Lanisha Penn.

They also say it provides a safe place for children old enough to stay home alone while their parents work, while still giving them a structured day.

These are $35 registration fees and $35 per week and parents can choose their weeks.
For more information we refer to the registration site here. Search for “teen” and look under the “Spring Hill – Teen” category and you will find a registration packet and a list of available weeks.
