Summer Safety Alert: Keeping Teen Drivers Safe on the Roads

As summer kicks into high gear, the Georgia Department of Driver Services (DDS) urges parents and guardians to prioritize the safety of teen drivers. With school out and more time for road trips and summer activities, it is crucial to address the increased risks associated with increased driving during these months. The period between Memorial Day and Labor Day is often referred to as the “deadliest 100 days” for teen drivers due to a significant increase in traffic accidents involving young drivers.
As Chairman of the American Association of Motor Vehicle Administrators (AAMVA) International Board of Directors, DDS Commissioner Spencer R. Moore Commits to Reducing Traffic Fatalities, Particularly Among Youth drivers.
“By providing education, resources and support, we aim to keep our young drivers safe on the roads this summer,” Commissioner Moore said. “We encourage all parents to take an active role in educating their teens about driving and reinforcing their safe driving habits. »

As a reminder, teenagers holding a Class D license (aged 16-18) must adhere to the following driving restrictions until they exchange their Class D license for a Class C license at age 18:

• Class D license restrictions
• Cannot drive between midnight and 5 a.m., without exception.
• During the first six (6) months following issuance, only immediate family members may board the vehicle.
• During the second six (6) months following issuance, only one (1) passenger under the age of 21 and who is not a member of the driver's immediate family may board the vehicle.
• After one year from the date of issue, only three passengers under the age of 21 and who are not members of the driver's immediate family may board the vehicle.

Information about teen driving, including requirements, restrictions, and certified driver training schools, is available on the Agency's website at www.dds.georgia.gov.
