Last Wednesday, the Suffolk Sheriff's Office competed to help provide blood donation opportunities to Suffolk residents.

Sponsored and hosted at the Hilton Garden Inn Suffolk Riverfront, the Mayor's Cup blood drive took place on Wednesday, June 5, with various residents coming to donate blood for those in need. The Cup, held in Hampton Roads cities including Hampton, Chesapeake and Norfolk, Chief Deputy Maj. David Miles said the goal of the competition was to “boost” the local blood supply this summer.

“The American Red Cross Mayor’s Cup runs through August 31, 2024, with the goal of collecting enough blood for patients, especially during the summer donation slump,” Miles said. “The Suffolk Sheriff’s Office supports this crucial cause and gives Suffolk a chance to win the Mayor’s Cup trophy.” Remember that the demand for blood is constant and your donation has an immediate impact. Give the gift of life this summer.

Miles says it is “gratifying” to work with the American Red Cross to help provide blood donation opportunities in Suffolk.

“The organization ensures a constant supply of blood for those who need it, which has a significant impact on the community by helping to save lives,” Miles said. “It is a privilege to collaborate with such a renowned organization on this important mission. »

Kim Morris, American Red Cross Team Leader and CS3, spoke about working with the Sheriff's Department for the blood drive.

“Well, I think it's great that they're willing to come and help us with registration and the canteen and work with them side by side,” Morris said.

Morris, herself a blood donor, spoke about her 23 years of work with the American Red Cross.

“We come in, we move to different locations and set up all our equipment. We have scheduled donors who come and even for some of those who are not scheduled, we sometimes have the opportunity to accommodate them without an appointment,” she said. “One liter of blood saves three lives. Very rewarding.”

Miles also pointed out that the Mayor's Cup is not the only blood drive opportunity residents can expect this year.

“The next blood drive, known as the Battle of the Badges, is scheduled for September 11,” he said. “This event will take place at the Downtown Hilton Garden Inn, with the Suffolk Police Department and Suffolk Fire and Rescue participating.”
