A student was stabbed after a graduation ceremony at South El Monte High School, authorities said.

The assault occurred around 9:20 p.m. on Wednesday, June 5, in the 1000 block of Durfee Avenue, just outside the football field fence, according to the Los Angeles County Sheriff's Department.

A fight took place outside the school, resulting in the student being stabbed in the chest. He was taken to the hospital in unknown condition, but is expected to survive, according to a report from ABC7.

The victim does not appear to be a graduate student, according to the report.

No description of the suspect was available and the motive for the stabbing was unclear.
