Street closures near downtown Ann Arbor for paving and utility projects

ANN ARBOR, MI – Two Ann Arbor streets near downtown and the University of Michigan's central campus will see new closures related to separate construction projects.

Hill Street, closed since March for a two-year overhaul of streets and utilities, is expected to see new traffic restrictions, while on Main Street, work related to a new private development will also change traffic flow, they said. Ann Arbor city officials said.

Construction on Main Street is scheduled to begin Wednesday, June 5, and will affect the area between East Davis Avenue and East Hoover Avenue, several blocks from Michigan Stadium, officials said.

The Main and Davis development, a newly constructed 36-bed apartment building, will occupy the northbound vehicle lane of Main Street to complete roadway restoration.

Work is scheduled between 9 a.m. and 5 p.m. during the work week, weather permitting, but the closure will be in effect 24 hours a day, officials said.

Vehicles are being moved to the west side of Main Street to maintain traffic in both directions. Access will be preserved for businesses, with “minor disruptions” to aisle access as aisle accesses are rebuilt, officials said. Pedestrians are being detoured to the west side of Main Street in front of the property.

The project is expected to be completed by Friday June 7.

Beginning Monday, June 10, Hill Street will have additional closures for water main installation work, officials said. Hill will close its doors between Tappan Avenue and East University Avenue at 7 a.m. The closure is expected to last until 5 p.m. on Friday July 12.

Eastbound traffic will detour north on Tappan Avenue, east on South University Avenue and south on East University Avenue back to Hill. Westbound traffic will follow the same route in reverse.

Construction began on Hill over the winter as part of a major renovation of State and Hill streets that began in 2023 and is intended to result in work on the city's water lines, fresh paving, sidewalk and pedestrian improvements and the addition of new bike lanes.

Hill is currently closed from South Fifth Avenue to the intersection of South State Street. Construction will take place in phases, with sections of Hill opening to one-way traffic during resurfacing work planned for later in June, July and August, according to the city's project page.
