A retail store shopper was arrested after a loss prevention officer saw her ringing a .97-cent spoon while she was wrapping a more expensive item.

The incident happened around 1:45 p.m. June 20 at Walmart, 23800 Allen Road, in Woodhaven.

According to a police report, the suspect either did not scan her items or she scanned a less expensive item for a more expensive one.

The loss prevention officer realized the alleged fraudulent tactic and arrested the woman after she walked through the doors of the grocery store.

Taking her back inside, the officer said it appears she failed to scan almost all of her merchandise.

He told police some of the stolen items were hidden in a bag she had purchased.

The woman told officers that the failure to scan the merchandise was simply a mistake and that the fact that the store's merchandise was in a purchased bag was simply an oversight – that she had forgotten that these things were there. found.

Based on loss prevention's account of what happened, the woman was taken into custody.

She was released on personal recognizance and issued a citation for retail fraud.

Police say the allegedly stolen merchandise totaled nearly $200 and was returned to the store.
