Stolen vehicle suspect arrested after running inside home at end of wild chase in San Fernando Valley

Police finally arrested a stolen vehicle suspect after a wild chase throughout the San Fernando Valley Thursday.

Officers from the San Fernando Police Department began pursuing the driver after he failed to stop in the city of San Fernando, sparking an hour-long chase that began just before 7:45 p.m.

The driver, driving a red Toyota Prius, swerved around a tractor-trailer that was trying to back into a parking lot at one point, nearly hitting another uninvolved car before mounting a curb.

At one point, the driver drove through a barrier in what appeared to be a dead-end street in front of a tire lot at Fleetwood Street and Tujunga Avenue in Sun Valley before crashing into a barrier, shattering the windshield and causing damage to the front of the car.

The driver then fled, still closely followed by the police.

Around 8:15 p.m., the driver drove into the northbound lanes of I-405 in Van Nuys. He then drove into the eastbound lanes of CA-118 in Mission Hills, then headed south on I-5 in Arleta, driving recklessly and dangerously weaving in and out of other cars at speeds of up to 110 miles per hour.

Shortly after 8:30 p.m., the driver pulled up to the closed gate of what appeared to be an apartment complex at Wyngate Street and Sunland Boulevard where they abandoned the car and ran on foot.

The suspect was seen running through the complex, under the spotlight of the Los Angeles police helicopter. As he ran, the suspect found a partially open garage and ducked under the door, unbeknownst to a pursuing officer.

After about two hours, LAPD officers said the suspect was finally taken into custody. It's unclear exactly where he was found, but the Burbank and San Fernando police departments had set up a large perimeter around the area for their search.
