Steuben County Sheriff's Office to host boater safety course

HAMMONDSPORT, N.Y. (WETM) – The Steuben County Sheriff’s Office Boating Unit and the Hammondsport Police Department will offer a boater safety course in Hammondsport.

The class will be held on Saturday, June 15, from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. at Hammondsport Central School in Room 134, located at 8272 Main Street Extension.

The class is limited to 30 students, so those wishing to attend should call 607-622-3911 to reserve a spot. The minimum age to participate is 10 years old and all students must bring proof of age with them when participating.

Anyone born on or after January 1, 1978, who wishes to operate a recreational boat must successfully complete an approved boater safety course. Those wishing to operate a personal watercraft at any age 14 or older must also successfully complete the course.

The course, which has been approved by the National Association of Boating Law Administrators, is a comprehensive navigation course that will teach the fundamentals of boating safety. After completing the eight-hour course, all students will receive a NYS Boater Safety certificate.

The Steuben County Sheriff's Office will offer monthly classes during the remainder of the year, which will be announced when locations and times are scheduled.
