State Board of Education calls for review of Oxford school shooting at the request of victims' parents

OXFORD, Michigan. – The State Board of Education voted 7-1 to ask the Michigan Legislature to require and fund a full independent review of the 2021 Oxford High School shooting in response to requests from the parents of the four students killed .

Council members also voted to request that the Legislature, as part of the FY 2025 state budget, make previously approved funding for children's mental health and school safety recurrent.

The State Board of Education voted Tuesday, June 11, to require that suicide and threat assessments be part of every school emergency operation plan and that threat assessment training be available in the framework of a train-the-trainer model for all school districts.

The vote comes after a May 21 board work session in which parents of the deceased students had the opportunity to share their thoughts and recommendations at the invitation of State Superintendent Dr. Michael F .Rice.

Officials say the resolution also addresses the 2023 mass shooting in University of Michigan.

The FY 2024 budget passed by the state Legislature and signed by Michigan Gov. Gretchen Whitmer, with support from the State Board of Education, included $456 million for children's mental health and child safety. school, which allowed the Michigan Department of Education to work with Metro Detroit and middle schools. districts must pay for additional helping professionals, school social workers, guidance counselors, nurses and psychologists, among other mental health supports.

In addition to Oxford's recommendations, the school board voted to urge the Legislature to require a full, independent investigation funded by a team of state agencies whenever one or more students have died as a result of a security event.
