Created: May 24, 2024 10:14 p.m.

A 20-year-old man was stabbed and fatally injured in an incident in Horseshoe Bay yesterday.

Police confirmed last night that the victim was fatally injured during a disturbance which occurred around 3.15pm.

The Bermuda Police Service also confirmed that a 17-year-old man had been arrested in connection with the incident.

In a statement, a BPS spokesperson said the victim was assisted by on-duty rescuers after suffering several stab wounds.

The man was then transported to King Edward VII Memorial Hospital for further treatment.

A police spokeswoman later confirmed the man had died.

The spokeswoman said: “The Bermuda Police Service can now confirm that the young man who was injured during a stabbing incident at Horseshoe Bay Beach earlier today has succumbed to his injuries.

“The investigation into the circumstances of his death is currently being carried out by the Grave Crime Unit.”

Police have asked anyone who may have witnessed or recorded the incident to contact Acting Detective Inspector Anneka Donawa at 717-2250 or [email protected].

Anonymous reports can also be made through portal.police.bm or Crime Stoppers at 800-8477.

Ben Smith, opposition national security spokesman, described the incident as a tragedy.

Mr Smith said: “What became of our beautiful home island when what should have been a day of celebration and unity ended in tragedy?

“As a community, we cannot continue to be sad in the moment and then go back to our normal lives.

“Serious action must be taken to counter the anti-social behavior that we are unfortunately seeing more and more of these days.

“I implore all witnesses today to please come forward.”

He added: “On behalf of One Bermuda Alliance, I would like to extend my deepest condolences to the family of the deceased. »

The killing comes after police warned ahead of the bank holiday weekend that they would move in force to try to crack down on criminal activity.

In a statement released on Thursday, Superintendent Dennis Astwood of the Bermuda Police Service said officers would carry out stop and search operations.

Mr Astwood said: “Our officers will be actively engaged in… implementing appropriate stop and search initiatives at various locations, in order to promote responsible behavior and deter any potential threats to security. »

In 2022, the force launched a campaign against the possession of sharps following concerns about rising knife crime.

Darrin Simons, the Commissioner of Police, said at the time: “The Bermuda Police Service has noticed what appears to be an increase in violent incidents involving the use of sharp articles.

“We have significantly increased our level of engagement due to the increase in violence we have seen. We are already very present.

“Officers do not need reasonable grounds in the circumstances. Authority is given for an area, for a given period of time, and officers have the ability to stop and search anyone in that area in order to prevent violence.

“Police officers have the power to stop and search anyone they suspect of carrying a sharp article.”
