D.C. Superior Court Judge Renee Raymond denied the release of a stabbing defendant after waiving a June 7 preliminary hearing.

Everette Eugene Johnson, 49, is charged with first-degree burglary while armed and assault with a dangerous weapon for his alleged involvement in a non-fatal stabbing that occurred June 4 in the 2700 block of Wade Road, SE. A woman suffered non-life-threatening injuries during the incident.

According to court documents, the victim said Johnson followed her home because she owed him money and broke into her residence. At one point, while at the victim's home, Johnson allegedly stabbed her.

During the hearing, Johnson's defense attorney, Susan Ellis, alerted the court that he was waiving his preliminary hearing and requested his release on electronic monitoring or home confinement.

Ellis said her client has a stable address and a supportive family, something she emphasized in the courtroom. Additionally, Ellis acknowledged Johnson's criminal record, with his most recent conviction dating back to 2018.

The prosecution opposed the defense's request, adding that Johnson currently has a misdemeanor case pending arraignment.

Judge Raymond denied Johnson's release, referring to his criminal history in a pretrial status report. She cited a previous supervised release of his that was revoked upon incarceration and probation that was rated as “unsatisfactory.”

The holidays are expected to return on June 28.
