Arlene Rado's husband Alan told ABC7 she was walking her dog Mickey when she was caught off guard by her attacker. Police said a man stabbed the woman with a “sharp object” then fled. The police found him and took him into custody.

The woman's husband said she initially thought she was being punched in the back, then realized she was being stabbed. He said a nearby pedestrian saw the incident and rushed to help, going so far as to open his suitcase and use his own clothes to help stop the bleeding.

Rado was transported to Northwester Medical Center in critical condition. Her husband said that at 6 p.m. she was in surgery and from what he had been told she should be fine. He said they lived a few blocks from Union Station.

Police said they were able to recover a sharp object at the scene and the attack appeared to be random.

Charges are pending. CPD area detectives are investigating.
