Springfield teen charged with murder to be tried as adult

SPRINGFIELD, Ill. (WCIA) — A 16-year-old accused of participating in the murder of a Southeast High School student in April will be tried as an adult, prosecutors said.

Sangamon County Prosecutor John Milhiser requested the transfer of Cordae Curb, who was 15 at the time of the killing, from juvenile court to adult court. On Monday, Judge Karen Tharp approved the transfer, finding it was not in the public interest for Curb's charges to remain in juvenile court.

“Violent crimes committed by anyone in our community, including juveniles, will be aggressively investigated and prosecuted,” Milhiser said in a statement. “We will continue to work closely with law enforcement to protect our neighborhoods from those who seek to cause harm. »

Milhiser alleges that on April 24, Curb was driving Dremone Patterson, 16, in a stolen vehicle when Patterson shot Keyon Day with a stolen gun. Day was shot multiple times and later died.

Patterson was previously charged in adult court with first-degree murder, possession of a stolen vehicle, possession of a stolen firearm and possession of a firearm by a gang member. Street. Curb was charged with the same offenses, as well as obstruction of justice for trying to dispose of the murder weapon.

The two teenagers are in police custody. Curb's next court date is June 20, while Patterson's next court date is June 24. They face up to 60 years in prison if convicted, with potentially an additional 25 years to life added to the sentence if a jury finds that Patterson or Curb fired the gun used to kill Day.
