Springfield man sentenced to 2.5 years in prison for bank robbery

SPRINGFIELD, Ill. (WCIA) — A 29-year-old Springfield man will spend the next two and a half years in prison for bank robbery.

Kyle W. Harris robbed a Marine Bank branch in Springfield on December 15, 2021. He handed a teller a note threatening to shoot everyone in the bank, then took more than $6,000. No guns were displayed, but U.S. District Judge Sue Myerscough said employees and customers were terrorized by Harris' actions.

Harris was arrested shortly after the crime, then pleaded guilty to the theft nearly two years later in December 2023. He has remained in the custody of the United States Marshal ever since.

At Monday's sentencing, Harris faced up to 20 years in prison, three years of supervised release and a $250,000 fine. Judge Myerscough ruled that Harris would serve 30 months in prison, followed by two years of supervised release.

The Springfield Police Department and the Sangamon County State's Attorney's Office collaborated on the investigation as part of Project Safe Neighborhoods. PSN aims to make neighborhoods safer by reducing violent crime and gun violence.
