SPASH graduate wins Badger Sheriff's Association scholarship

By Brandi Makuski

Stevens Point — Adam Schlice, 18, graduated from Stevens Point Area Senior High (SPASH) last week, and he already has a firm grip on his future.

Schlice received one of four 2024 scholarships from the Badger Sheriff's Association. The scholarship will support his studies at Mid-State Technical College, where he plans to pursue a degree in criminal justice.

“My plan is to become a law enforcement officer; my goals are Plover or Portage County [Sheriff’s Office]”, said Schlice. “After the rides and my observations, these are my two top choices.”

A brief awards ceremony was held May 22 at the Portage Co. Sheriff's Office, with sheriffs from Marathon, Langlade, Waupaca, Wood, Adams and Waushara counties joining Portage Co. Sheriff Mike Lukas to congratulate Schlice.

This year, the Badger State Sheriffs Association (BSSA) had to choose from 70 candidates.

Lukas expressed his excitement, saying, “We look forward to his career and hope he chooses the Portage County Sheriff’s Office.” »

The BSSA includes all 72 Wisconsin sheriffs, providing resources and training to help each sheriff's office fulfill its constitutional responsibilities.

The association's annual scholarship, developed in 2023 in memory of Sheriff Ron Cramer and Deputy Kaitie Leising, is intended to honor fallen law enforcement officers. In 2024, four $1,000 scholarships will be awarded to college or technical students pursuing careers in law enforcement.

Schlice resides in Stevens Point with her parents, Steve and Mari.
