SANTIAGO DEL TEIDE, Spain (Reuters) – Spanish police are examining CCTV footage from a town on the island of Tenerife near where British teenager Jay Slater disappeared, its mayor said on Tuesday.

Slater, 19, disappeared on June 17 and his phone was last found at the Masca ravine in a remote national park in the Canary archipelago.

Dozens of police, rescue teams and firefighters have been searching the steep valley on the island's west coast since Wednesday, using dogs, drones and a helicopter.

Warren Slater, the teen's father, on Monday shared a blurry photo taken by a security camera in the city of Santiago del Teide of a person who could be his son in hopes it would aid the search, reports said. British media.

“We know that the police are investigating (the CCTV images). They have requested the security cameras from the town hall and they are also working with the company that manages these cameras,” Mayor Emilio José Navarro told Reuters.

The image shared by the family to British media shows a person walking in the town, but it is impossible to make out a face.

Navarro said police interviewed several people who might have seen him, including some who said they thought they spotted him on the coast watching Euro 2024 soccer matches.

British national Tom Beckett, who is familiar with the area where Slater last used his phone and was in Santiago del Teide on Tuesday, said the teenager may not have reached the city.

“If it had been on the road it would have been seen by many tourists. It's a very narrow road so they wouldn't have missed it, they would have seen it,” Beckett told Reuters.
