Spanish police end search for British teenager in Tenerife

Case of disappearance of British teenager remains open, search endsMissing British teenager case remains open, search ends Spanish police have ended the search for Jay Slater, a 19-year-old British teenager who went missing on the Canary island of Tenerife in June, but the case remains unsolved. According to a spokeswoman for the Guardia Civil, the search has stopped, but authorities continue to investigate several leads. Slater's disappearance has baffled investigators since his phone was last traced to the remote Masca Ravine in a national park. Extensive search efforts involving dozens of police, rescue teams and firefighters were carried out in the steep and rugged terrain, using dogs, drones and a helicopter. However, the search proved difficult due to the difficulty of accessing the rocky area. Despite stopping the physical search, volunteers joined forces with police and rescuers on Saturday, forming a team of more than 30 people to search the ravine. The case remains open and authorities are determined to solve Slater's disappearance.

MADRID (Reuters) – Spanish police said on Sunday they had ended the search for British teenager Jay Slater, who has been missing on the Canary island of Tenerife since June 17, but the case remains open.

β€œThe search is no longer ongoing, but the case is still open and there are several lines of inquiry,” a spokeswoman for the Guardia Civil told Reuters.

Slater, 19, was on vacation on the island when he disappeared. His phone was last found in the Masca ravine, in a remote national park in the north of the island.

Dozens of police, rescue teams and firefighters have since been scouring the steep valley using dogs, drones and a helicopter.

“The search has been going on for several days because it is a rocky area and difficult to access,” the spokeswoman said.

Some volunteers joined police and other rescuers to form a team of more than 30 people who searched the area Saturday.
