(KRON) — A South San Francisco man was arrested Friday after holding his grandmother hostage and barricading them both inside a home, South San Francisco police said.

SSFPD responded to the 200 block of Linden Avenue on Thursday at 6:12 p.m. for a report of a woman calling for help. When police arrived, they learned that the 70-year-old victim was being threatened with a knife by his 30-year-old grandson, identified as Miguel Gutierrez.

As police negotiated with Gutierrez, he forced the victim into the home, prompting a SWAT response, police said.

After six hours of discussion with Gutierrez by the SSFPD Crisis Negotiations Team, “negotiations became stagnant and concerns about the victim's well-being increased,” police said. Just after midnight, SWAT executed a “high-risk hostage rescue.”

The victim was brought to safety and Gutierrez was taken into custody without anyone being injured.

Gutierrez was booked on charges of kidnapping, assault with a deadly weapon, false imprisonment, battery and brandishing a weapon.
