SOUTH OGDEN, Utah, June 9, 2024 (Gephardt Daily) — Police arrested a man after he allegedly attempted to rob a Sinclair station by taking food after his credit card was declined.

Rufus Fofie Rogers, 27, was arrested Saturday by South Ogden police for investigation of grand larceny, a first-degree felony, and criminal trespass, no entry notice, a class B misdemeanor.

The Sinclair station had previously posted a notice prohibiting Rogers from entering the store due to previous theft issues.

Police were dispatched to Sinclair, at 880 W. 3300 South, at 11:13 p.m. Saturday, the affidavit states.

“En route to the scene, the dispatcher told me the victim reported that Rufus Rogers had a rock in his hand and was attacking the employees and robbing the premises,” the affidavit states.

Victim 1, a store clerk, said Rogers started a fight when Victim 1 began to collect items after Rogers' payment card was declined.

Rogers allegedly grabbed a large rock from the landscaping area outside the store “and threatened to hit Victim 1 with the rock if Victim 1 did not give Rufus the food.”

Rogers ate items without leaving the store. A second victim told police Rogers pushed him and also threatened to hit him with the large rock.

“Rufus excitedly stated that he told Victim 1 he would smash his head in with a rock,” Rogers’ arrest documents state. “Rufus excitedly added that he ate a hot dog and a corndog and didn't even pay for it.

“Rufus had just been released from prison about an hour before this incident. Rufus had been kicked out of the premises during a burglary for which he had just been released from prison. Rufus has been convicted of theft three times in the past year.
