South Korean weapons for Kyiv?

After North Korea and Russia signed a military assistance treaty, South Korea is reportedly considering providing military equipment to Ukraine, the country's news agencies report. South Korea has so far adhered to a policy of not supplying weapons to war zones. Commentators consider this news an important development.

The ever-ready weapons giant

Exiled politician Maxim Katz explains to Echo why Seoul could become a key ally for kyiv:

“Despite its modest size, South Korea ranks 11th in the world in terms of defense spending. … It occupies 6th place in the ranking of military strength, ahead of all European countries. And more importantly, South Korea today has one of the best and most modern defense industries in the world, is rapidly expanding its military exports and selling artillery shells to the United States. … South Korea never had a chance to rest and relax. Unlike Western countries, it is one of the most combat-ready countries in the world and has both the latest technologies and very large reserves of weapons and ammunition.

Zelensky's efforts to gain support are paying off

Visão considers it a major step forward that states like South Korea and Kenya are positioning themselves more strongly against Russia and in favor of Ukraine:

“Zelensky thus gains new momentum and broadens the geographic scope of his support. This should be the dual objective following the Swiss summit: to mobilize new States in favor of the compromises obtained, by strengthening them through coherent and better coordinated public diplomacy on the part of all these States, and to try to add one or two points additional to Ukraine's ten points. -point of view at a future summit, which should preferably take place before the American elections and be hosted by a non-European country.”

Moscow's fatal miscalculation

The Kremlin has made a big mistake with its new alliance, explains exiled politician Leonid Gozman in Novaya Gazeta Europe:

“It could be that Putin's strategists, as always, have not taken into account the fact that they are not alone in the world. Putin promised Kim Jong-un a lot (in terms of more or less high-tech weapons), and somehow Seoul was not happy about it. It's one thing to call the ambassador and air your grievances, but it's another to supply weapons to Ukraine. Especially since they have as many weapons as Kim. … This embrace with Kim Jong-un does not only represent a normalization of evil. …This is another very important stepping stone to hell.
