South Jordan police shoot suspected suspect with knife

SOUTH JORDAN, Utah — Police shot and killed a person who later died Saturday after they say the person threatened them with a knife Saturday afternoon.

The South Jordan Police Department said someone called them Saturday to report seeing someone peeking out of a car window Saturday. They quickly located a person matching that description in Skye Park, near 9800 South and 4800 West in South Jordan. Police did not identify the person or provide other descriptive details such as their gender.

According to South Jordan Police, upon arrival at the park, the person brandished a knife. In a press release, police said they first attempted to defuse the situation using less lethal methods, although they did not specify which ones.

“After several attempts to gain compliance proved ineffective, the subject advanced toward officers with the knife and was shot,” according to the press release.

Police say they took the person into custody and took him to a hospital for treatment, but he died.

SJPD says a critical incident team of officers will handle the investigation from here. The officers involved were placed on leave, a common practice whenever deadly force is used.

Parts of Skye Park and Skye Drive will have to remain closed while police investigate.
