South Florida AFL-CIO Endorses James Reyes for Miami-Dade County Sheriff

Miami-Dade Public Safety Chief James Reyes adds another significant local support to his bid to become the county's next sheriff, drawing support from the South Florida AFL-CIO.

“When you want to know what a public servant really believes in, you look at what he or she has done. Chief James Reyes has an incredible track record of fighting for workers' rights, supporting his staff, and participating in good faith collective bargaining because he knows that when the needs of our law enforcement officers laws are satisfied, our communities are safer,” said the South Florida AFL. -CIO President Jeffrey Mitchell said.

“We are proud to support Chief Reyes and look forward to working with him as sheriff.”

The organization includes 53 affiliated unions representing more than 239,000 workers. Mitchell's statement Monday reinforces Reyes' union support. Florida Chapter of the American Federation of State, County and Municipal Employees also supports Reyes.

Reyes, a Democrat, is part of a very strong field to become the county's first elected sheriff since the 1960s. He is the best fundraiser in the field so far I've given it to him lots of financial resources. He thanked the South Florida AFL-CIO for its support in a prepared statement.

“It is an honor to receive this endorsement from our South Florida AFL-CIO members. I have always been proud to support our workers because caring for our community and keeping our residents safe means we must also care for our law enforcement professionals by ensuring they receive the pay and benefits they deserve,” Reyes said.

“As your next sheriff, I will continue to engage in good faith collective bargaining and always support the brave men and women who keep Miami-Dade safe.”

Reyes has locked in a lot of local support like him keep on going her campaign. This includes the endorsement of the mayor of Miami-Dade County. Daniella Levine Cava.

With qualifying complete and the field now defined, Reyes will face Miami-Dade Police Maj. John Barrowformer federal agent Susan Khoury and retired Democratic Miami-Dade police Lt. Ricky Mitchell for the Democratic nomination. This primary will take place on August 20. The winner will advance to the general election on November 5.
