South Broadway store to close after second fire in 6 months

The co-owner of Refillanthropy said the business has no plans to reopen after last week's fire.

DENVER — After the second fire in less than six months, rechargeanthropy on South Broadway says they have no plans to reopen.

Last week, Denver firefighters responded to a report of a fire at a commercial building near South Broadway and East Bayaud Avenue Tuesday morning. It's just north of East Alameda Avenue. When firefighters arrived on scene, they saw fire and smoke coming from the first floor of the building, according to Denver Fire.

The fire burned the interior of the store and left extensive water and smoke damage.

“It’s a really devastating loss,” said Vesper Holly Muck, co-owner of Refillanthropy.

“Last week, with the fire and everything, my entire inventory was basically gone,” Holly Muck said. “Anything that wasn’t damaged by the fire itself, was damaged by water or smoke.”

Last February, the company's door caught fire.

“The first one was in February and that one, our door caught fire because there was a homeless person sleeping in the doorway and they started the fire, it was very cold that day. that night, so they lit the fire to keep warm,” Holly Muck said.

Holly Muck hopes to return to do pop-up shops in the future.

Last week's fire remains under investigation by the Denver Fire Department's arson unit.
