Sources: US Marine indicted for alleged attempted sexual assault in Okinawa

Investigative sources say prosecutors in Japan's Okinawa prefecture charged a U.S. Marine Corps member earlier this month with allegedly attempting to sexually assault and injure a woman.

Prefectural officials and investigators said the 21-year-old Marine master corporal was charged by the Naha District Attorney's Office on June 17, after being arrested in May for allegedly trying to assault an adult woman and injure her.

They say the woman resisted and the Marine left the scene, but police tracked him down after receiving a call and arrested him outside a U.S. military base.

It emerged earlier this week that a U.S. Air Force member based in Okinawa was indicted in March over the alleged kidnapping and sexual assault of a minor last December.

On Thursday, Okinawa's vice governor filed a protest with U.S. Forces Japan over the December incident, saying the incident worries people forced to live next to U.S. bases on Okinawa.

The vice-governor also protested against the delay in reporting the incident to the prefecture.

Okinawa Gov. Tamaki Denny spoke to reporters Friday about the latest case involving the U.S. Marine Corps. He said he felt indescribable anger.

He also stressed the need to review a communications system allowing the prefecture to be notified of incidents involving American soldiers.

Okinawa, home to about 70 percent of U.S. military installations in Japan, has been the scene of numerous incidents involving U.S. service members. Protests against the situation are likely to intensify after recent allegations of sexual assault in the prefecture surfaced.
