Sounds of gunshots near the Downtown Days festival in Lee's Summit

The sound of gunshots caused a disturbance Saturday evening at the Downtown Days festival in Lee's Summit. Fortunately, the Lee's Summit Police Department says no one was seriously injured. LPD says the unrest began around 10 p.m., near the end of the festival on Saturday. Officers were alerted by the sound of shots fired near Southwest 3rd Street and Jefferson Avenue, just outside the festival boundary. The department says officers responded quickly to the scene and did not locate any victims or potential suspects. Police believe the people responsible for the shooting immediately left the scene. The noises caused several problems within the festival. After the first incident, police said several young festival-goers tried to create “artificial panic” by running around and acting as if an emergency was occurring. The ensuing panic caused an elderly woman to fall to the ground. She was transported to an area hospital and treated for minor injuries. The multi-day event returned to normal hours on Sunday without incident. During the festival, LSP says it maintained a strong presence.
