Solar panels catch fire at Woodrow Wilson School in Sayreville

SAYREVILLE – Authorities continue to investigate why a rack of 25 solar panels caught fire at Woodrow Wilson Elementary School Sunday afternoon, Sayreville Schools Superintendent Richard R. Labbe said.

For the moment, the cause of the fire is unknown, he added.

The school will open as usual on Monday, unless additional information is received, Labbe added.

According to Sayreville Police Lt. James Novak, a neighbor saw the flames and called 911 to report the fire around 3 p.m. The fire was extinguished quickly and was limited to the solar panels. Crews from all fire companies responded to the scene, said Sayreville Engine Company #1.

Thanks to the rapid intervention of firefighters, the fire was extinguished very quickly, Labbé said.
