Smoking materials likely cause of Woburn house fire where young girl was pulled from roof – Boston 25 News

WOBURN, Mass. — A three-alarm house fire that displaced three families in Woburn was most likely started by smoking equipment, Fire Chief Donald Kenton said Tuesday.

The Woburn Fire Department responded to 1 Richmond Park following multiple 911 calls around 3:45 a.m. Sunday. Crews observed heavy flames upon arrival and quickly sounded a second alarm, followed by a third.

A neighbor's surveillance camera filmed the fire coming from the top floor of the three-unit building.

Chief Kenton said a child escaped through a window and firefighters rescued a young girl from a ground ladder.

“The Tower 1 crew saw a young girl trapped on the roof and immediately threw a ladder to the ground and were able to rescue her while the engine builders were able to put water on the fire that had set her trapped,” Woburn Fire said on Facebook. job.

Both children were transported to a Boston hospital with injuries that were not life-threatening. Woburn Mayor Mike Concannon said she and a young boy were both treated for smoke inhalation. No firefighters were injured, Concannon said.

Firefighters were able to bring the fire under control in approximately 45 minutes.

Through an investigation, state and local firefighters determined the fire started on an enclosed porch near the left rear of the second floor and then spread to the third floor and roof.

Investigators believe the most likely cause was improper disposal of smoking materials. According to Chief Kenton, there is no evidence that the fire was intentionally set.

“Smoking materials are the leading cause of fatal fires in Massachusetts and nationwide,” said Chief Kenton. “A fire like this, which occurred early in the morning while the occupants were sleeping, could easily have turned into a tragedy. I want to thank our Woburn firefighters and mutual aid partners for their decisive action to protect nearby residents and homes.

All residents have been relocated and are receiving assistance from the Massachusetts Red Cross.
