Smoke seen from fire burning in Pikes Peak Sunday afternoon, USFS response

EL PASO COUNTY — The United States Forest Service (USFS) says a fire is burning in Pikes Peak, causing a plume of smoke visible from Colorado Springs.

WHAT WE KNOW:

  • One-acre fire since last update, 3:35 p.m.
  • Burning near Manitou Reservoir, 4.5 miles northwest of Manitou Springs
  • The United States Forest Service responds with a helicopter to provide support
  • Initial reports indicate lightning caused the fire
  • Named the Manitou Fire

Viewers sent in images of a plume of smoke coming from a fire burning in an area near Manitou Reservoir according to the USFS. About 4.5 miles northwest of Manitou Springs according to the agency.

According to the USFS, the fire is approximately one acre in size as of this update and was caused by a lightning strike, according to initial reports. The fire is currently called the Manitou Fire.

The USFS says the fire is located on the Manitou Water Shed property, within a fuel processing unit.

The Colorado Springs Fire Department is aware of the situation, but as of the publication of this article has not been called to provide mutual aid.

No prior evacuation order was issued.
